Module 2

In your Blogger blog, reflect on your own digital footprint and personal thoughts on digital citizenship, as well as the necessity of teaching students about digital citizenship in school. Also, discuss your thoughts on an appropriate age of introduction to digital citizenship.

I believe that students or children should be taught digital citizenship as soon as they begin using technology. They should be monitored and taught proper use.  It is a parents responsibility when students are at home. Teachers should be teaching students about the amazing resource that can be used for education.  Through various projects or daily use of technology students should be told the appropriate behavior expected of them while they are online. They need to be reminded of it and encouraged to practice it.   In addition, to that there should be clear, concise consequences for inappropriate behavior.  It is a teachers responsibility to teach good digital citizenship.  Students will develop good responsible habits if they are taught what is appropriate or and what is not.  I also feel that the younger students are being taught from a young age and therefore it will be a part of how they grow and develop.  We will teach responsible habits as they grow and develop with technology.  I have 2 children that currently have smartphones that enable them to access just about any type of media they choose.  We have set what is acceptable and what is not.  They must have permission to join any type of site that they communicate with other people.  They must ask us to purchase or download any games.  We have full access to their phone at all times and if they misuse it, they will lose it.  We have open communication about what they are doing and talk about what others are doing, as well.  Because of the timing of all of this new technology we have learned together.  We have had conversations about why we have to be careful of what we say online.  It is written down and it is hard to take back so be sure that you would be comfortable with anyone reading or seeing it.  They have made a few mistakes, but this is how they learn and grow.  Supervision is key to keeping children safe online and this applies to my students at school, as well as, my own children at home.  It is not easy, but it is necessary and important to teach responsible digital citizenship.
